SHARING OUR CUSTOMER STORIES AND SUCCESSES

Building Strong Foundations: East West Rail's Journey to IBM® DOORS® Next Mastery

Optimise Engineering recently partnered with East West Rail (EWR) to enhance their systems engineering capabilities through the delivery of a comprehensive IBM® DOORS Next Administrator Workshop. This initiative aimed to equip EWR's engineering team with the necessary skills to effectively manage and utilise IBM® 's DOORS Next, a leading requirements management tool.

Challenge

EWR uses IBM®  DOORS®  Next to manage a large, complex set of engineering requirements across multiple disciplines - civil, signalling, systems, operations - and needed expert-level administration capabilities. Their objectives included:

  • Tailoring the tool to their workflows;
  • Managing traceability and version control efficiently;
  • Empowering in-house administrators to self-sustain the platform.

Solution & Delivery

Optimise Engineering designed and delivered a bespoke, day-long DOORS®  Next Administrator Workshop led by Principal Consultant, Matt Mendell. The day was finely tuned to EWR’s unique requirements, with a pragmatic mix of:

  1. Structured learning:  hands-on administration of DOORS®  Next, including user setup, module configuration, access control, baselines, and change management.
  2. Interactive discussion: open Q&A, real-life scenario work, and troubleshooting.
  3. Advanced feature deep-dive:  bespoke guidance on DOORS®  Next and IBM®      Engineering Workflow Management (EWM) functionality.

Matt’s flexibility meant he seamlessly deviated from the plan to answer pressing questions and explore advanced workflows in depth.

Results

Post-workshop, EWR top 3 learning outcomes included:

  • Implementation of Global Configuration Management
  • Advanced Reporting Functionality
  • Advanced User Permissions and Project Configuration

Head of Systems Engineering, Steven Turner commented:

Matt Mendell led an excellent day-long workshop. The course agenda was specially designed to meet our specific requirements, and the day had a good mix of structured course content and open discussion.

Matt was happy to go off agenda at times and provided detailed technical guidance on the advanced functionality of DOORS®  Next. Matt was professional, incredibly knowledgeable and facilitated the workshop well.

Conclusion

Through the strategic partnership with Optimise Engineering, East West Rail has strengthened its systems engineering framework, ensuring better project outcomes and alignment with industry best practices.

Optimise Engineering and East West Rail continue to build on their strong partnership, working collaboratively to deliver innovative, customer-focused rail solutions that support the project's long-term success.
